A road safety and prevention program was held last week by the ESH committee in conjunction with Vision Zero Malaysia under PERKESO and Klinik Al-Ansar.
My favourite event was the motorcycle inspection and safe riding demonstration even though I don’t possess a rider’s license or a motorbike.
The instructor was a former champ so he knows motorcycles inside out in his explanation and the way he interacts with the audience.
The first steps of staying safe on Malaysian roads is preparation of your machine as well as knowledge on how to use it well – I try to summarize as the following tips I got from last week:
1. Tires:
Check tire pressure and ensure it meets manufacturer specifications. Inspect tires for any signs of wear, cuts, or punctures. Verify the tread depth to ensure it is within acceptable limits.
2. Brakes:
Test both the front and rear brakes for responsiveness. Inspect brake pads and discs for wear. Check brake fluid levels and ensure there are no leaks.
3. Lights and Indicators:
Test headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. Replace any faulty bulbs and ensure proper illumination.
4. Fluid Levels:
Check the levels of essential fluids, including engine oil, coolant, and brake fluid. Top up fluids if necessary and address any leaks.
5. Controls and Cables:
Inspect throttle, clutch, and brake cables for proper tension and smooth operation. Ensure handlebars and controls are securely fastened.
6. Suspension:
Check fork seals and shocks for leaks. Inspect suspension components for any signs of damage or excessive wear.
7. Drive Chain/Belt/Shaft:
Lubricate and adjust the drive chain or inspect the belt/shaft for proper tension. Check for any signs of wear or damage.
8. Exhaust System:
Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, rust, or damage. Ensure the exhaust meets noise emission standards.
9. Electrical System:
Test the battery and ensure it is charged. Inspect wiring for any frayed or damaged connections.
10. Frame and Body:
Check the frame for cracks or damage. Inspect bodywork for any loose or missing parts.
11. Fluid Leaks:
Look for any signs of fluid leaks under the motorcycle. Identify the source of leaks and address them promptly.
12. General Functionality:
Test the horn, mirrors, and any other electronic components. Ensure all nuts, bolts, and fasteners are securely tightened.
By performing regular and thorough motorcycle inspections help maintain safety and prevent potential issues, contributing to a smoother and more reliable riding experience.
