Caring for Eyesight from Device Screens

There’s an app or smartphone feature for that.

The first step to a healthy eyesight is to be aware of your situation. Monitor weekly consumption, know which app take most screen time at which period of time – is there’s a trend?

Smartphone recently have features that measure the distance of the screen to your face and blanks out until it is in a safe distance. Enable this built-in feature or download an app that does this.

Put a daily time limit on screen time, and make that time limit clear for everyone. Generally, a max of 1 to 2 hours is recommended after dinner.

Set up no-device areas, like the dining room and kitchen, where no one (adults included) can use their devices. Don’t eat in front of screens, this applies at work and at home.

Limit devices usage in bedrooms. This can help to protect solid sleep schedules. The bright blue light from screens in a dark room may be harmful to your eyesight due to the contrast and prolonged everyday habit. Use bedside lighting if you have to.

Watch screens together. Make it a chosen family activity rather than a mindless individual one. Some smartphones have this ‘watch together’ feature where connected accounts stream together simultaneously.

Okay, back to reality. TGIF.
