Handling Materials Safely

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to contribute to the annual company event – Quality Day and part of the exhibition requested was Material Handling awareness gallery as part of continuation from last year’s Part Protection awareness gallery.

Daily ingress and egress of components or assemblies from station to the next expose them to risk of damages by fall or collision from forklifts or electric pallet trucks or even trolleys. Among the elements we need to take consideration operating powered machines as such are:

• Training and Certification of employees designated to handle powered equipment, ensure only competent personnel allowed to operate.

• Equipment Conditions are well maintained per checklist especially battery water, wheels and at least full service once a year.

• Load Capacity Awareness both on the capability of the equipment and part/assembly to be transported. Another aspect to take count is the center of gravity of the load, this can affect the stability during movement.

• Load Stability needs to be ensured before moving, cordstrapping the part/assembly onto pallets or fixing them mechanically decreases the risk of falling.

• Clear visibility is needed when traversing with goods on powered machines so that the operator able to perform emergency maneuvers if there’s a sudden object or person obstructing the line of sight.

I hope this inspires your Monday morning, if you are still having the case of the Blues – send me a private message – I’ll if I can help out.

Cheers 🥂 MFR
