Not my grandpa’s house though

Before moving to Tanah Melayu or now known as Malaysia, my grandfather was trained in the arts of woodworking or carpentry. His house in Johor and most of its furniture made by hand. In contrast I only build structures using Lego or steel but its always a topic that is dear to heart.

Woodworking is a craft that involves shaping, assembling, and finishing wood to create various structures and objects. Here are some fundamental aspects of woodworking:

1. Different wood species have varying characteristics in terms of hardness, grain pattern, and color. Understanding these properties helps in choosing the right wood for a project.

2. Safety is paramount in woodworking. Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), understanding the proper use of tools, and maintaining a clean and organized workspace are essential.

3. Common hand tools include saws, chisels, planes, and carving tools. Power tools such as drills, routers, and sanders can also be used for efficiency.

4. Joinery involves connecting wood pieces securely. Common techniques include dovetail joints, mortise and tenon joints, and lap joints. Each has its strengths and is chosen based on the project’s requirements.

5. Precision is crucial in woodworking. Accurate measuring, marking, and layout ensure that pieces fit together seamlessly.

6. Learning proper cutting techniques with hand saws or power saws is fundamental. This includes straight cuts, angles, curves, and intricate designs.
