Recently I was tasked to revamp the quality control inspector skill matrix syllabus for the new year and as I write the details down I noticed the areas that I expect my team to master but I never conducted a formal class on the references of internal and international standards, limits and samples.
I interviewed each new inspector to gauge the current on job training program effectiveness and found some differences between their experiences mainly on the type of tools exposure and ability to discern the types of visual defects and how to quickly remedy the ones that does not require an extensive rework plan.
I also found that the team need improvement on mill cert and test reports review because nobody likes to pour pages of ASME or ASTM and counter check against the various templates, every supplier has their own and some with limited english words. Some lacking details required or pages of reports or figures, all these will require feedback to supplier for correction.
This will be one of my challenges this year, I hope I can get them up to speed. My main reference is the certified quality inspector program from ASQ, its always been my wish to certify my inspsctors under this program but was turned down previously because there’s no project/order requirement for it.
I will keep trying, wish me luck.
Cheers 🥂 MFR
