Measure to Improve

Two things I’ve changed to my routine this week, one is using a heart rate monitor during my morning hike. For now its not able to show patterns since there’s not enough data, maybe soon if I’m able to continuously do this.

I bought it off marketplace under RM70 before I invest in more expensive smartwatches with more features like blood oxygen and fall detection later this year. Wearing this adds a few single digit minutes to setup time since I need to wet the sensors and wear the strap around my torso.

Another thing that’s changed is I’m hiking with extra weights now, one and a half kilograms strapped to each arm. Since the sand bags are the bulky and has simple straps due to their low starting costs, I add a few more minutes to my overall setup time. The better version is those metal plates denser inserted into bracers with pockets.

The first day with the added weights is significantly noticeable because my body needs to adjust the effort and posture to support them – shoulder back and maintain stride but after a few days it’s starting to feel normal again perhaps due to muscle memory adjusting and mind set.

Here’s to more measuring for improvement.

Cheers 🥂 MFR
