Truth be told; I was not a good team player during my schooldays due to the competitive nature of examinations, rankings, class streamings I noticed its better nowadays – the Malaysian education curriculum is not perfect but improving in so many ways based on my personal view.
Thankfully due to college syllabus and working arrangements, I adapted to work in teams for assignments, presentations, projects and even cheerleading. I didn’t expect it to be fun because of my introverted nature and I usually dread the idea of managing peers.
I also learned that by having a team charter as early as possible can help members uphold a moral compass and as a constant reminder on their commitment. This document provides the means to engage each other and ways to resolve conflicts.
A good team charter contains the following elements:
- State the team’s purpose
- Outline the team’s structure
- Discuss resource strategies
- Define conditions of success
- Establish communication plan
- Set ground rules and conflict resolution steps
- Review together and sign off
I learned to use this from the team work assignments in college and applicable to work and home activities – it’s simple but effective.
