My eldest is unhappy because he’s asked to help at home, so I took him out for a walk.

No one warned me about the challenges to keep being a leader, how great the temptations to deviate when no one is looking, the difficult decisions I had to take leading teams. Leading a family is no different.

At the workplace, direct reports can be coached, disciplined and dismissed when the time comes and there’s structure, rules, resources and laws to oversee and facilitate this. But at home, we cannot dismiss our children – we have no choice but to align them back to the path of making them a useful human no matter how far they deviate.

I find that taking a walk helps to get children to talk, icecream is a shortcut that I won’t advise unless you need to due to the sugar count. Changing the environment works because we relief the stress out, dissecting the problem by dialogue and hopefully the root cause is found and a solution can be worked out.

So, the next time you’re having a problem with your direct report or a team member – its time to take a walk to hash it out.

Cheers 🥂 MFR
