How to Bounce Back from Missed Opportunities

Neat way to merge Kübler-Ross and ADKAR together in one diagram by beamery.

Once a while no matter how well prepared or well positioned you are for an opportunity, Murphy’s Law comes into effect exactly how the aerospace engineer said it back in 1949, “What can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time”.

I am no stranger to this law and with some help from colleagues, life experiences and self-help reading I’m back to preparing for the next best opportunity or there’s that saying in ice hockey 🏒 “skate to where the puck is going to be”.

Using a change management framework to get back from a missed opportunity involves structured steps to adapt and recover. A commonly used change management model is the ADKAR model, which stands for Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Ability, and Reinforcement:

Awareness: Recognize and accept that you missed an opportunity. Understand the implications of this missed chance and the need for change.

Desire: Develop a strong desire to recover from the missed opportunity. Set clear goals and objectives for what you want to achieve as a result.

Knowledge: Acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to seize similar opportunities in the future. This might involve education, training, or seeking guidance from experts.

Ability: Put your newfound knowledge into practice. Take concrete steps to create or capture new opportunities that align with your goals.

Reinforcement: Establish a support system and mechanisms to sustain your progress. Ensure you stay on the right track and continuously adapt to changes in your environment.

In addition to the ADKAR model, you can also draw upon other change management frameworks such as Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model or Lewin’s Change Management Model. These frameworks provide structured approaches to guide you in the process of recovering from a missed opportunity by facilitating change and adaptation.

I hope this helps you get out of whatever situation you are stuck in and hopefully you are ready to grab that next opportunity.

Cheers 🥂 MFR
